Streams & Wetlands

Riparian zones - the transitional areas between land and water - play a vital role in supporting salmonid and other aquatic species These areas help regulate water temperature by providing shade and contribute woody debris that creates and improves in-stream habitat. Riparian areas often includes streams, wetlands, or a combination of both.

If you own or manage streams or wetlands on your property in San Juan County, the San Juan Islands Conservation District offers free, non-regulatory assistance to help you meet your conservation goals. Regardless of the size or seasonality of your stream or wetland, we may be able to help you better steward these invaluable natural resources.

The District is a non-regulatory agency, and all restoration work is completed on a voluntary basis and is tailored to your property and goals. Click the assistance button to get started today.

Programs and Services

Technical Assistance

Technical assistance is the foundation of our work with landowners. We provide the knowledge, guidance, and tools needed to help conserve, maintain, and restore the natural resources on your property while supporting the long-term health of your streams, wetlands, and surrounding habitat.

This assistance is offered at no cost and is tailored to your property, goals, and concerns. Using the latest science and research, we work collaboratively with landowners to provide practical recommendations and information that support informed stewardship decisions.

Technical assistance may include phone consultations, site visits, resource recommendations, and/or personalized stewardship plans.
