POSITION: Islands Conservation Corps (ICC) Restoration Specialist
REPORTS TO: ICC Field Supervisor

COMPENSATION: $25-35/hr, DOE, plus full benefits

CLASSIFICATION: Regular Full-Time

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Thursday

LOCATION: San Juan Island, Lopez Island, Orcas Island, outer islands.

OVERVIEW

The Islands Conservation Corps (ICC), operated by the San Juan Islands Conservation District (SJICD), is seeking Restoration Specialists to support hands-on ecological restoration projects across San Juan County.

 

Restoration Specialists work as part of a small, highly collaborative field crew under the guidance of ICC Field Supervisors and the Restoration Manager. Projects span both private and public lands and are funded through a combination of local, state, and federal programs. ICC partners with a wide range of organizations on a fee-for-service model to conduct restoration including the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank, San Juan Preservation Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Town of Friday Harbor, Washington State Parks, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, San Juan County Environmental Stewardship, and Friends of the San Juans.

 

This position offers the opportunity to build technical skills in ecological restoration while refining approaches to maximize restoration outcomes within the unique conditions of the Washington Archipelago. The role includes restoration planning and day-of project management responsibilities, while contributing to projects that improve watershed health, enhance wildlife habitat, and increase climate resilience across the San Juan Islands.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in daily field operations implementing ecological restoration projects

  • Riparian restoration activities including site preparation, native planting, live staking, and plant protection installation

  • Support forest health by performing fuels reduction work, including thinning and small woody debris placement

  • Assist with habitat enhancement projects such as large wood installation, wetland restoration, and beaver dam analog (BDA) construction

  • Conduct invasive species removal using manual and mechanical methods

  • Assist with project setup, equipment organization, and daily field logistics

  • Support project design, implementation, and reporting within areas of personal specialization (as applicable)

  • Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and chainsaws (training provided)

  • Collect field data for restoration tracking and monitoring

  • Participate in ongoing training related to restoration practices, ecosystem processes, and land stewardship

  • Contribute to a positive team culture centered on safety, accountability, and collaboration

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years of experience in ecological restoration or related field

  • Experience with project logistics, coordination, or implementation

  • Familiarity with San Juan Islands ecosystems (riparian, forest, prairie, and nearshore systems)

  • Experience with tool maintenance and field equipment management

  • Experience or interest in one or more specialized areas:

    • Prescribed fire

    • Forest health and thinning

    • Riparian and wetland restoration

    • Prairie restoration

    • Tribal engagement and co-stewardship

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check

  • Willingness to work in physically demanding field conditions and variable weather in remote locations

  • Ability to lift 40 lbs

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

​This position includes a mix of field, office, and remote work. Fieldwork occurs in a variety of weather conditions and terrain types. Staff may be required to use personal vehicles for work-related travel; mileage reimbursement is provided at current Washington State rates.
