JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
POSITION: Bookkeeper
COMPENSATION: $30-$42/hour depending on experience, plus benefits
HOURS: 20 hours per week (part-time)
LOCATION: Friday Harbor, San Juan Island
Overview:
The Conservation District Bookkeeper plays a supporting role in managing financial transactions, maintaining accurate records, and supporting the financial operations of the Conservation District. This position works closely with the Executive Director, Finance Manager, a third-party accountant and other staff members to ensure that financial resources are efficiently organized and effectively utilized in support of conservation efforts and organizational goals. The 2026-27 budget estimates revenues of over $3 million.
The San Juan Islands Conservation District is an organization committed to the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in San Juan County. We work collaboratively with local landowners, farmers, and other stakeholders to promote environmental stewardship and implement practices that enhance the health of our ecosystems. We are seeking a dynamic and passionate individual to join our team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Bookkeeper will play a supporting role in the following duties and is not expected to be solely responsible for all duties listed:

Financial Record Keeping:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using appropriate accounting software and systems.

Record financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and expenses. Many transactions require double-entry accounting procedures.

Ensure compliance with accounting principles, standards, and regulations.

Accounts Payable and Receivable:
-
Process invoices, reimbursements, and payments in a timely manner.

Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and suppliers regarding payment inquiries and discrepancies.

Generate invoices for services provided and track accounts receivable.

Payroll Administration:
-
Prepare payroll reports, including employee hours, deductions, and taxes.

Address payroll-related inquiries from staff members and external agencies.

Ensure compliance with federal and state payroll regulations.

Administrative Support:
-
Provide administrative support as needed, including filing, data entry, and correspondence.

Assist with special projects and initiatives as assigned by the District Manager or Board of Directors.

Financial Reporting:

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.

Provide financial analysis and insights to support decision-making processes.

Assist with the preparation of grant applications and funding proposals.

Audit and Compliance:

Facilitate annual audits and reviews as required by regulatory agencies and funding sources.

Maintain documentation and records for audit purposes.

Implement internal controls to safeguard financial assets and prevent fraud.

Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
-
Proven experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or financial management.

Familiarity with double-entry accounting procedures.

Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office applications.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
Desired Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.

Familiarity with government regulations and grant management.
Work Environment:
Normal office environment with desk, phone, and computer provided. Position involves extensive computer and telephone work.
