The Federally
funded cost-share Environmental Quality Incentive
Program
If you have a farm and/or forest plan and are interested in cost sharing on conservation projects listed in your plan please contact us for the applications.
The ranking is a competitive points based system but is wide open now as we have no applications pending as of today.
July 15th Cut-off Date for Applying to Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)
Washington’s most popular agricultural conservation program has a new application ranking cut-off date – July 15 – USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
EQIP is a voluntary, cost-share assistance program that helps conservation practices including those aimed at helping farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities; and reduce soil loss.
In most instances, producers who participate in the program pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices.

The San Juan County Conservation District has changed its name to...

The San Juan County Conservation
District has changed its name to the 'San Juan Islands Conservation
District'. The Washington State Conservation Commission formally
agreed to the name change at the January 2007 commission meeting.
Previously although the district was formally the San Juan County
Conservation District, it was often referred to as the San Juan
Conservation District - primarily to avoid the misperception that
it was a county agency. (It is actually is a quasi-autonomous,
state agency.) However this also implied that the district only
served the interests of San Juan Island. Of course we serve all the
San Juan Islands that comprise San Juan County. The new name is
reflected in the new logo and updated web site (& shortly email
addresses). Forgive us if we sometimes forget how to answer the
phone correctly - all these changes are making our heads
spin!

Peter Alexander - math geek and former
Waldron teacher - is helping Friday Harbor High School kids improve
their math scores. The high school has formed a class for students
identified as needing extra help with their math, and is taking an
innovative approach to helping them. The students get to choose to
work on a project that ties applications of math to practical
examples in the 'real world'.
Rachel Dietzman - a well known San Juan Island civil engineer - and mom to a high school student - came up with the idea of creating a rain garden on school property to absorb and filter rainwater from the roof. She then turned to the Conservation District for help, and enlisted Steve Hussey to help with the design issues, and Danna Kinsey to help with plant selection. Danna has her masters degree in Landscape Architecture, and grew up on Lopez and Orcas Island.
Last Tuesday Peter, Rachel, Steve and Danna gave presentations to the class, to help them decide which project to choose. Over the next few weeks the students will be involved in calculating roof areas, rainfall, volumes and using that information to design a rain garden. Later they will dig the rain garden, amend the soil, and plant plants that are either salvaged from the school grounds or purchased from the District plant sale.
