July 15th Cut-off Date for Applying to Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)
Washington’s most popular agricultural conservation program has a new application ranking cut-off date – July 15 – USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
EQIP is a voluntary, cost-share assistance program that helps conservation practices including those aimed at helping farmers improve irrigation efficiency; manage nutrient run-off and/or animal waste; improve the health of native plant communities; and reduce soil loss.

In most instances, producers who participate in the program pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices.

Arbor Day 2008

Celebrate Arbor Day on April 25, 2008!

What is Arbor Day?

Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.

Founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872, National Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April.

Tim Clark from Lopez has joined the team

We're excited that Tim Clark of Lopez Island has joined us on a part-time basis to work on Farmland Conservation Easements. You can read about Tim on the Bio's page. Rumor has it that we'll find space and a desk for him sometime this year.

Working with GIS

November 14, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, New Wing on the First Floor of the County Court House in Friday Harbor.

The Conservation District is working with SJC Public Works on a GIS Day with SJC Public Works, Assessors Office, Weed Board, Public Health, etc. A broad section of county departments, as well as non-profit and private organizations, will demonstrate the diversity of organizations using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Booths and displays will demonstrate the uses of GIS within the county.

Bruce Gregory joins the CD as Farm Planner.

Local farmer Bruce Gregory joined the district as the new farm planner, replacing Bryan Cornelius who went to Alaska to work on a historic lighthouse restoration project.

Climate Change page added to to the Information section.

Lots of links to climate change websites and a few good PDF's to download and digest.

The San Juan County Conservation District has changed its name to...

The San Juan County Conservation District has changed its name to the 'San Juan Islands Conservation District'. The Washington State Conservation Commission formally agreed to the name change at the January 2007 commission meeting. Previously although the district was formally the San Juan County Conservation District, it was often referred to as the San Juan Conservation District - primarily to avoid the misperception that it was a county agency. (It is actually is a quasi-autonomous, state agency.) However this also implied that the district only served the interests of San Juan Island. Of course we serve all the San Juan Islands that comprise San Juan County. The new name is reflected in the new logo and updated web site (& shortly email addresses). Forgive us if we sometimes forget how to answer the phone correctly - all these changes are making our heads spin!

Excavators Workshop

The San Juan Islands Conservation District will be holding a day long workshop for excavators, and the people who love them. The class will be held on March 16th at the Grange Hall in Friday harbor. Times and agenda to be determined. Times will be set to suit the inter-island ferry schedule. For more information call Danna Kinsey at 378-6621.

Eliza Buck joins our staff

Eliza Buck joins our staff as part-time Agricultural Resources Co-ordinator. She'll be working with Ron Zee, our district manager, to support the activities of the Agricultural Resources Committee. You can contact her at the regular office number - (360) 378-6621. Eliza and husband Dan both farm on a small scale on their San Juan Island property.

Natural Resource Planner and Educator help establish Raingarden at the Friday Harbor High School.

Peter Alexander - math geek and former Waldron teacher - is helping Friday Harbor High School kids improve their math scores. The high school has formed a class for students identified as needing extra help with their math, and is taking an innovative approach to helping them. The students get to choose to work on a project that ties applications of math to practical examples in the 'real world'.

Rachel Dietzman - a well known San Juan Island civil engineer - and mom to a high school student - came up with the idea of creating a rain garden on school property to absorb and filter rainwater from the roof. She then turned to the Conservation District for help, and enlisted Steve Hussey to help with the design issues, and Danna Kinsey to help with plant selection. Danna has her masters degree in Landscape Architecture, and grew up on Lopez and Orcas Island.

Last Tuesday Peter, Rachel, Steve and Danna gave presentations to the class, to help them decide which project to choose. Over the next few weeks the students will be involved in calculating roof areas, rainfall, volumes and using that information to design a rain garden. Later they will dig the rain garden, amend the soil, and plant plants that are either salvaged from the school grounds or purchased from the District plant sale.
